My research focuses on developing practical artificial intelligence, intelligent sensing and IoT solutions for real-world environmental and engineering challenges. It spans environmental monitoring, autonomous systems, cooperative perception, multimodal data fusion, remote sensing, medical imaging and wireless communications.
I lead and contribute to government- and industry-supported projects in areas including saltwater crocodile detection, forestry weed monitoring and fire-risk vegetation mapping. A central aim of my work is to translate advanced research into deployable systems that deliver meaningful environmental, societal and industry impact for Northern Australia.

Dr. Huang received the B.Eng. degree in Electronics and Information Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China, in 2003, the M.Eng. degree in Sensor System Signal Processing from The University of Adelaide, Adelaide, SA, Australia, in 2007, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, NSW, Australia, in 2016.
He was an Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Research Fellow and a Visiting Scholar at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong; a Research Associate at the University of New South Wales; and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at James Cook University. Prior to joining academia, he held various industry roles, including Senior Engineer, Senior Data Scientist, Project Team Lead, and Technical Lead. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at James Cook University (JCU), Cairns, QLD, Australia, where he serves as the Head of International Partnerships at the College of Science and Engineering and as Co-Deputy Head of the JCU Centre for AI and Data Science Innovation (CADSI).
Dr. Huang has received several awards, including the Australian Postgraduate Award, the Engineering Research Award from the University of New South Wales, the Best Paper Award at the IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (2011), the IEEE Outstanding Leadership Award (2022), the IEEE Access Outstanding Associate Editor Recognition (in year 2024, 2025, and 2026), two Springer Nature Editor of Distinction Awards 2026 (Editorial Contribution Award and Author Service Award), and the JCU Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning (2022). He currently serves as Vice Chair of the IEEE Northern Australia Section and Chair of the local MTT-S/ComSoc Chapter. He previously served as Chair of the IEEE Young Professionals Affinity Group for the IEEE Northern Australia Section. He has also held leadership roles at international conferences, including General Co-Chair, Publicity Co-Chair, Workshop Co-Chair, Publication Co-Chair, Technical Program Committee Chair, Program Vice Chair, and Symposium Chair. He is an Associate Editor of Scientific Reports, IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computing, IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society, IEEE Access, Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence, and IET Communications.
