The crocodile-detection project achieved broad multi-platform visibility through television, national and regional radio, ABC News, Australian Associated Press syndication, regional newspapers, online media, Queensland Government communications and university media.
The coverage also positioned the research within a broader discussion of public safety, environmental monitoring and the practical use of artificial intelligence in northern Australia. The project continued to receive regional coverage beyond the initial March 2026 media cycle, including a feature in The Express Newspaper in May 2026.

Our research on deep-learning-based multimodal remote sensing for oil-spill detection attracted national and international science-media attention.
The study developed an AI approach combining synthetic aperture radar and hyperspectral imagery to improve identification of oil-spill location, characteristics and type. The work was led by my PhD student Quanwei Liu, and I supervised the research. Media coverage highlighted both the methodological advance and its potential application to environmental monitoring.
JCU highlighted the research as a new approach to high-precision oil-spill detection from satellite imagery and discussed its potential significance for environmental monitoring. The feature includes my explanation of the multimodal sensing approach and its potential extension to other environmental applications.
Phys.org provided international science-media coverage of the research. The article explains how combining SAR and hyperspectral imagery improves oil-spill detection and quotes me on extending deep-learning and remote-sensing approaches to water quality, forests, disasters and other environmental-monitoring challenges.
The research was subsequently featured for a broader mainstream online audience through Yahoo News.
I joined ABC Nightlife to discuss the research and the potential of artificial intelligence and remote sensing for environmental monitoring. The appearance is also recorded in my JCU Research Portfolio as a media activity.
The National Tribune carried the research story and included my explanation of how SAR and hyperspectral imagery complement each other, as well as the broader environmental-monitoring potential of the work.

The United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response highlighted the research in the context of using space-based technologies for disaster management. UN-SPIDER noted its potential to reduce environmental harm, strengthen marine protection and contribute to broader environmental hazard detection.
The oil-spill research progressed from a scholarly publication to university media, international science media, mainstream online media, national radio and a United Nations knowledge platform, demonstrating the broader environmental relevance and accessibility of the research.

Our research on vehicle-to-everything cooperative perception for autonomous driving examined how connected autonomous vehicles can share sensing information to extend their awareness beyond the limitations of their individual onboard sensors.
The work was published in Proceedings of the IEEE. I was the lead author, and my PhD student Xi Zhou was co-first author. Media coverage highlighted the potential of cooperative perception to reduce blind spots and support safer autonomous mobility.
